Buying wine from Guy du Vin over the Internet is a little like listening to a stripper being interviewed on the radio. It's the RADIO!! Imagination is a wonderful thing, but somehow the radio experience just doesn't "stand up" to the live performance, if you know what I mean. We are fully aware that Guy du Vin wine descriptions are wonderful and could even qualify as literary genius among those who write in our local newspapers. But (fledgling Hemingway's that we are) we remain humble and are fully aware that when it comes to wine, and especially when it comes to buying wine, there is no substitute for tasting.
Howard Stern's next lineup - Topless DancersGuy du Vin focuses on value wines that tend to be from wine growing areas that are probably a little less familiar to you than the Willamette Valley or Napa. So putting up your presumably hard earned cash for something you have never heard of is a bit of a gamble - unless you are already familiar with the types of wine that Guy du Vin likes to buy, drink and sell.
There are a couple of solutions to this problem.
A quick and simple one is to visit the restaurants where Guy du Vin consults on the wine list. Bluehour, Southpark Seafood Grill and Wine Bar and Lauro Mediterranean Kitchen all serve great food. Each has a wine program that features Guy du Vin recommendations in a wide range of prices. This is an easy way to get a quick idea of the styles of wine we like and will help reassure you that when you order from us you are not going to get wine that reminds you of that cheese that has been languishing in the back corner of your refrigerator for the last 8 months.
Another option is to join the staff of Guy du Vin on Friday November 7th for our second "Garden Party Friday" event at
The Jealous Gardener. We wrapped up our first party this last Friday and a good time was had by all. We didn't think it was possible, but Guy du Vin
ran out of wine (gasp) and we had to return to World Headquarters (conveniently located just down the street) and replenish our supplies for our thirsty fans. Anyhow, we'll be there again starting at 4:00 p.m. on first Friday, November 7th. Watch for us again on December 5th. And remember that a bottle of wine makes a great Holiday gift and a case is even better!! (Shameless hucksterism gets easier as one gets older and ever more desperate.)
And if downtown works out better for you to sponge off of Guy du Vin and drink our wine for free, then come visit us at Southpark Seafood Grill and Wine Bar. We'll be popping in for a couple of hours on Friday evenings (from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on October 24th, November 21st and December 12th, to be more precise) and pouring some samples for your enjoyment. Chef Ronnie will also prepare some small bites to accompany our incredible selections.
And for those folks who don't live near the Portland area, we are very sorry that you can't join us but, if you'll buy the plane ticket, we'll bring the wine! (If we could figure out a way to keep the wine from spilling out of our little plastic cups, we'd send you a sample tray!)
We are confident that the chances of you buying wine from us and loving it are pretty high. (Heck - the survival rate of SARS is over 90% and they call it a plague.) Come to a Guy du Vin wine tasting, and taste some of the wines we sell. Meet us, see how incredibly cool and sophisticated we are. Note how great we must have looked at one point in our lives. But most importantly, taste how delicious the wines are that we offer and perhaps learn a little something about this wonderful beverage.
