Welcome to 2007
It just wouldn't be the New Year if we didn't have regrets. So here are my top five wine related regrets left over from 2006.
1. Unlike most of the bottles in my wine cellar, I am no longer young. I am not the only person at my house that feels this way about me. Say all you want about how we gain character as we age, I prefer myself in a younger state. I fear getting "corky". I have already developed a briary, bitter note; am a little too acidic; have developed a tired, musty aroma; am a little too fleshy and full-bodied; and, worst of all, not as woody as I used to be.
2. I regret that I did not update my lifestyle habits again last year. Consequently, my 25 year old "software" is running on over 50 year old "hardware". The effects are sad and distressing.
3. I regret spending too much time giving the benefit of the doubt to polished, one-dimensional wines made in the "international style" of winemaking. The essential components of these wines seem to be overly ripe, rich fruit flavors with varying degrees of depth, and pretty much nothing else. In addition, simply buying a more expensive wine is no longer a guarantee of a wider range of complex flavors and textures not found in lower-end wines.
4. I regret any time I spent last year reading about wine in our local newspaper. Someday, they will stop treating us like dimwits.
5. I sincerely regret my nude photo session for "Earthy Essence Magazine" last July.
