Pointless
Samuel Johnson once said "This is one of the disadvantages of wine; it makes a man mistake words for thoughts."
There is a website called justwinepoints.com. This is a fairly new site that only gives wines a point score out of 100. No other words. No mention of who tasted the wine or who gave out the points. No description of the wine. Their tag line reads, "because nothing else matters." (We love the purity of thought!)
We were thinking (hoping?) that maybe the whole wine scoring thing was beginning to lose a little steam. Not going away, but maybe wine drinkers were getting a little smarter and beginning to recognize the emptiness, dishonesty, and speciousness of wine scoring and how it is used.
But now, after looking at justwinepoints - We were wrong!
Oh, the sweet, sweet stupor of wine marketing. Let us sink into its mindless, empty, warm embrace. Wash away our errant thoughts of wild yeast, non filtration, and non-interventionist winemaking. Fill us with the full bodied sweetness of high alcohol, high pH, and a really good sales pitch.
We have seen the light and to show our new commitment to the Gospel according to Parker, the Holy Spectator and justwinepoints.com, we have gutted our cellar at home of our bottles that scored lower than 95 points and poured them down the sink. We were going to give them away to our readers, but how could we inflict upon you a wine that only scored 88 or 85 points (or even 94 or 91).
Time to update Samuel Johnson: "One of the disadvantages of wine; it makes a man mistake points for thoughts."
