The No Fact Zone

We had two minor illuminating grasps of reality over the past couple of weeks.

We were walking out of the
Sellwood Library and passed two twenty-something young men. One must have been telling the other about the neighborhood. As they passed us one said to the other, "I dunno, I think maybe somebody used to sell wood to people here or something."

I realized right then that Portland could offer serious competition for
Overheard in New York. (warning - some of these quotes, are, ahhh, colorful - don't click if you are easily offended.)

And this got me thinking, in a free country like the USA, do we have a right to be stupid? Is there a limit to stupidity? And since there is a constantly expanding demand by consumers for stupid stuff and stupid ideas, does imposing a limit even make any sense? Stupid generates a tremendous amount of revenue. It generates jobs. It generates ways for us to spend our time.

The second little epiphany was wine related. In the September issue of Wine Enthusiast, one of Napa's outstanding wineries that is best known for producing very good Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux blends, harvested what the owner says "may be the first commercial crop of Grüner Veltliner grown in California."

The depressing aspect of this article is that one of the primary reasons the winery is experimenting with Grüner Veltliner is because the grape is "hot" among sommeliers. Curiously, the owner made it plain that the winery is not yet sure that it can produce a good example of the wine.

Sounds like the cart before the horse to us. Get the story out before you make the wine. For some reason, this Pamela Anderson quote came to mind: "I'm not an actress. I don't think I am an actress. I think I've created a brand and a business."

No matter how voluminous the evidence to the contrary, there are still those who believe that it is always possible to do in a couple of years what has taken generations for others to accomplish.

Soil? Climate? Terroir? Just words to help sell the "product".

Mediocrity - It takes a lot less time and most people won't notice the difference until it's too late. (Guy du Vin's favorite quote from
