Keen Reds and Ham
It has been a while since our last update. So much has happened since then. Debates; U.S. - Iran talks; TB scares; Immigration bills. And sadly, Paris Hilton has been in - and out - and back in jail. The Guy du Vin staff continues our 24/7 "Free Paris" vigil and is working on the "Shooters for Scooter" Silent Auction and Sack Lunch Concert.
The reason for the lengthy delay in updating the website is that we have been spending quite a bit of time traveling. We visited the Castilla y León region of Spain, and also spent a few days in Madrid. We returned home a couple of weeks ago and a few days later headed over to Bend. Next up is a trip to Aspen for the Food and Wine Classic. I have read that the average American gains between four and seven pounds over the Christmas season. Guy du Vin gains four to seven pounds every time he changes time zones.
Spain was brilliant. Great food, Jamón Ibérico, superb architecture, Jamón Serrano, terrific wine, Chorizo Ibérico, the Prado, Morcón Ibérico, Plaza Major, Lomo Ibérico, Salamanca, Plaquet Serrano, beautiful scenery, Bocadillo de Jamón Ibérico, the bullfights, Bocadillo de Chorizo.
Friends keep asking what I liked best about Spain - what is the first place that I would go to on a return visit? It's not the beautiful town of Salamanca; not the unforgettable art at the Prado; not the wonderfully restored abbey at Abadia Retuerta; not even a visit to see the wonderfully chic and sophisticated women of Madrid. None of these.
No - I would trade an arm and a leg for 15 minutes at Museo del Jamón for a caña de cerveza and raciones y bocadillos. I loved this place. From the hams (hundreds of them) hanging from the ceiling, to the crowds at all hours eating and drinking, to the staff shouting out orders to the guys behind the counter, to the little old ladies coming in for their beer and complimentary bocadillos. We need a place like this in Portland.
We tasted some great wine, especially at Abadia Retuerta in Ribera de Sardon. We are offering one of their wines in this newsletter. Be sure to order at least a half a case - once you taste it, you will be glad you did.
We realize that there is a sea of Spanish wine in the market these days. It is important to remember that, just as with any region or country that produces wine, the vast majority of what is out there is just ok. Not bad - but not particularly good either. We spend a great deal of time and effort to find what we believe to be the best examples and best values around. Spanish wine presents a real test for wine lovers these days in that one can spend a lot of money and still end up with mediocre wine. Remember that Guy du Vin Wine Club Members can always give us a call for advice on what is worth seeking out before your wine budget disappears like the period after the Dr. on a Dr Pepper can.
