Rocks and Gravel is Steve Edmunds' entry level wine and is probably the wine by which Edmunds St. John is best known. It's a warm, spicy red that showcases lovely, ripe California fruit within a frame that seems decidedly European.

I sometimes hesitate to describe Steve's wines. I guess that is true of all the wines that I truly enjoy. The reason is wrapped up in a saying I remember from the 70's TV show, Kung Fu. You do not gather the beauty of the flower by plucking her petals, Grasshopper. So I think it is true with wine, that when you try to break a wine into its components, you end up losing something - and probably the most important part.

Rocks and Gravel is a blend of grenache (38%), mourvèdre (34%) and syrah (28%). It calls to mind the red wines of the Southern Cotes-du-Rhone. But at the same time is clearly a California wine. It shows a deep purple-red color and a nose of roasted meat and black fruits, with a little smokiness tossed in.

By this time I'm sure that you know how highly we think of Steve, his wines, and his musical talents. Steve Edmund's wines are the complete opposite of most New World, public relations heavy, made up, bought-and-paid-for-winery-story from a marketing company by some Wine Spectator high-score hungry estate owner. Most of those wines make me think of a 50 dollar haircut on a 50 cent head. Steve's wines are always the real thing.
