Cantina del Pino is located in a part of the Piedmont called the Langhe where some of Italy's most famous wines are produced.

Barbaresco sits high above the Tanaro river where wine grapes grow alongside truffles, hazelnuts and chestnuts. One can also find some of the world's most famous cheeses. This area boasts nine Michelin starred restaurants.

Cantina del Pino is a father and son operated estate. Renato Vacca is an enologist and spends most of his time running the cellar while his father, Adriano Vacca devotes his energies to the vineyards. Most of their six hectares lie in the Ovello di Barbaresco sub zone, although a small portion is located in Gallina di Nieve.

Cantina del Pino produces 30,000 bottles a year and was bought by Renato's grandfather in 1925. Prior to 1997, the family sold its harvest to the Cantina dei Produttori del Barbaresco. They now vinify their own grapes and have earned the Tre Bicchiere (Three Glass Award) from Gambero Rosso for two years running - first for their 2003 Barbaresco and recently for this wine, the 2004.

This is a delicious Barbaresco, exactly in the style I love. The bouquet is intense, with bitter, smoky notes. On the palate, it is medium bodied, with delicate aromas of black cherry, black pepper, tobacco, and cigar box. Fully ripe fruit, with excellent structure. This wine is delicious now, but would be best from 2010 to 2015.
