Visiting the Abadía Retuerta Estate was definitely one of the wine highlights of our recent trip to Spain. Abadía Retuerta is located just outside the border of the Ribera del Duero region in Spain's north central province of Castilla y León, approximately 20 miles east of Valladolid. This section of the Duero River produces some of Spain's most sought after wines.

This is a particularly beautiful area of the country and the estate (which is an abbey dating from 1146) is dazzling. Documents dating to the mid-1600s substantiate that by that time, the hundred or so monks in residence produced approximately 125,000 liters of wine annually.

Abadía Retuerta's approach to viticulture and vinification is focused on terroir. Each of the estate's 54 vineyard blocks is treated individually from cultivation through aging until the final blend is assembled. The finished wines are either blends of several blocks or in some cases single-block cuvées. There is a striking mix of the old and the new at Abadía Retuerta, but it all seems to fit together very well. On the one hand, the abbey and monastery date back to the 12th century; on the other, the winery which is located a short distance away, is very modern and high-tech.

Selección Especial is a blend of 75% tempranillo, 20% cabernet sauvignon, and 5% merlot. This wine is a great value and a perfect example of the best in Spanish wine today. It has all the earthiness and minerality of an Old World Wine, yet it shows the power, fruit and style of modern winemaking. Selección Especial ends up being a perfectly delicious expression of that tension between Old and New World.

Very intense color, dark black cherry. Complex and attractive nose, fresh, deep red fruit, and a touch of eucalyptus well blended together in the wood. Hints of roasted coffee and caramel after a few minutes in the glass. Full and powerful but still very soft and gentle on your mouth. An expressive and aromatic wine. It is very finely textured and has a long finish. It tastes like it should cost much more than it does. (Which is what we are always looking for at Guy du Vin.)
