Here is a quintessential Guy du Vin wine selection - obscure, incredibly delicious, and hard to define. It is the sort of deliciously dark and exotically sexy wine that one sneaks out of the house for, to meet secretly again and again. It has an affinity for leather and chains and that certainly would never be allowed in our more exclusive, gated communities.

Domaine Rotier Gaillac "Renaissance" Rouge is made from duras 30%; braucol (or fer servadou) 15%; syrah 40%; and cabernet sauvignon 15%. It is the reserve wine of the winery. A wonderful example of a wine that is slightly rustic and powerful, yet refined and elegant at the same time. We loved the 2002 version of this wine, but the 2004 vintage is even better. This wine is a classic! And it is only going to get better. The 2004 shows more dark fruit and a little less of an herbal note - just enough to add a bit of interest. Full bodied and very drinkable right now. The wine has the color of dark crimson. The nose suggests blackcurrant and cherry, with spice and pepper in the background.

The vineyard of Domaine Rotier is near the town of Cadalen, on the left bank of the Tarn River in Southwest France, where the soil is predominantly alluvial (composed of the sedimentary deposits of rivers or streams).
Winemaker Alain Rotier has 38 hectares of vineyards - 70% in red and 30% in white grapes. The red grapes are syrah and cabernet sauvignon, along with two ancestral grapes of the Gaillac region, duras and braucol. Duras is one of the very few obscure varieties that have been gaining popularity in France. (The whites are sauvignon blanc and loin de l'oeil, so named because the first several buds do not produce fruit, so the fruit appears "far from the eye.")

This area is influenced by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Summer high temperatures are in the mid to high 80s with cool nighttime temperatures. Winters can be below freezing, but rarely for extended periods. The altitude is about 600 feet above sea level.
