Message in a Bottle

Weygandt LogoI was very fortunate to have Peter Weygandt, the highly respected wine importer, stop by Guy du Vin Intergalactic Headquarters recently. I had met Peter a few times in the past, but this was the first opportunity I had to speak with him at length and taste wine with him.

Since 1987, Weygandt has been an importer of wines from many parts of the world and has gained a national and international reputation for the quality of his selections and his portfolio of top “boutique” French wines. Peter Weygandt Selections are a near constant feature of top wine journals including Parker’s The Wine Advocate, The Wine Spectator, Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar, and Burghound.

Unexpectedly, this tasting (of only eight wines) has become one of those defining points in time that caused me to look at wine a little differently. I have always loved the wines that Peter brings into the US and in tasting through this line-up, I was struck by how consistently good each wine was. It was a critical mass of wines with an extra dimension of character. And even though I am an old, cynical taster and even though each wine was completely different from the one that preceded it, each wine was pure, bright, alive, and indescribably delicious. The quality bar was raised dramatically.

It is crystal clear that what Peter Weygandt does so well is find special winemakers – people of talent who work hard, but also have that extra feeling about what they do that comes through in their wines. That indefinable thread – that “extra something” is what Weygandt looks for in the wines he chooses to import.

I have rarely enjoyed a tasting more than this one. And it is rare indeed to taste a single portfolio that is so consistently excellent with wines that are so complete and so satisfying. Here are some selections from Peter Weygandt:

  • Sollner Gruner Veltliner Hengstberg AUS 2007
  • Albert Mann Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg Alsace FR 2007
  • Domaine de la Berangerai Cahors Cuvee Maurin FR 2006
  • Domaine Charvin Cotes du Rhone Le Poutet FR 2007
  • Domaine Gauby Cotes du Roussillon Villages Vieilles Vignes FR 2006
  • Gerard Morin Sancerre Vielles Vignes FR 2007
