Dour Grapes
I'm sure that all of you will be pleased to learn that Norway will soon join the list of wine producing countries! Now you may scoff at the notion that Norway, being as far north as it is, would be able to get grapes to ripen enough to make wine, or at least wine that you could actually drink and live to tell about. But according to - and this is true - the Norwegian Minister for Vinous Affairs, Loof Lirpa, the summers are long and because it never really gets dark at that time of the year, it "makes up for the low temperature by exposing the grapes to as much sunshine as they would see in Tuscany."
Wine production will begin next year in the northern village of Ugotterby. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay will be produced, but we at Guy du Vin are eagerly awaiting the first bottling of an indigenous variety called Joerking which we assume pairs very well with the Scandinavian delicacy lutefisk - which means, literally, "cod soaked in plutonium".
Now, we at Guy du Vin always do our utmost to remain open-minded about most things wine related. In years to come we may all be sitting around the table sipping Old Vine Joerking and quietly saying things like "not bad" or "could be worse" or "please pass the lutefisk". The up side of all this is that the trip we were planning to Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia for next year can now be turned into a wine trip - and a tax deduction! We promise to report on how this all turns out. In the meantime - Uff Da!
