The Crankiness Continuum
A note of apology for the rather high levels of crankiness that have been emanating from Guy du Vin lately. I read a quote from me in the Oregonian the other day to the effect that if you couldn't deal with using a real wine glass (one with a stem) that maybe it was time to grow up. I noticed that I sounded just a tad grumpy. Right - but grumpy. So, I'm sorry. But if you really wanted to see grumpy, you could have joined us on our 11-hour plane flight (I use the word loosely here - we didn't do a lot of flying, just waiting) to Santa Barbara last weekend on the friendly skies airline with the great music. Sometimes it's easy to see why companies go into bankruptcy and this one should never come out.
On a bright and positive note, we are doing our best to avoid broken arms as we pat ourselves on the back. We are compelled to let you know that Southpark Seafood Grill and Winebar (which over the years has won quite a number of awards for its wine list) has won yet another one. (Guy du Vin has been heading the wine program at Southpark since it opened in 1998.)
This award is Restaurant Hospitality's 15th Annual Best Wine List in America Competition. Southpark won the Grand Prize in the Short List Category. The two other winners were Gary Danko, San Francisco, in the International Category, and Arterra, San Diego, in the U.S. Category. The judges were the experts at Chicago's Beverage Testing Institute.
The article states: "If the art of creating a great short wine list is like crafting a haiku, then the Southpark Seafood Grill & Wine Bar's list is pure poetry. Every wine selected is a distilled essence of a grape varietal, wine region, or interplay between the two and carefully chosen to match the innovative pan-Mediterranean cuisine.
...What appears to be simple and effortless remains so from the beginning of the wine experience to the end. It does not belie the broad diversity of the wines, the complexity of the selection process, and the seamless craft of general manager Karin Devencenzi, wine director David Holstrom..."
Couldn't have said it better myself. So you see, I'm not cranky, I'm a tortured artist. Now get in the slow line, 'cause I need a cuppa coffee.
