2006 was an outstanding vintage for Tuscany. The year gave rich, luscious fruit for the Poderi del Paradiso Chianti Colli Senesi. It is a wine that is immediately enjoyable – right from the moment you pull the cork.

We love Chianti around our house, but it often seems that we search and search in order to find a good one (that doesn’t cost an arm and leg). This Chianti from the Colli Senesi area is made of 100% Sangiovese with just the right amount of spice and complexity. It has concentrated, rich fruit with lots of juice and lots of power. Bright red cherries mix with baking spices and the classic Italian "amaro" (bitter) finish keeps the sweet fruit in check. We just can’t get enough of this wine. We managed not to drink the entire bottle the first night and found it even better the second night.

The enologist at Poderi del Paradiso is Paolo Caciorgna, one of Italy’s superstar enologists. There is no other consultant who can claim to have a hand in more award-winning Tuscan wines than Caciorgna. He feels that too many locals make basic wine for unknowledgeable tourists. He says: “insipid juice with pretty labels”. Caciorgna can't stand the trend, and neither can the owner of Fattoria Paradiso, Dottore Cetti.

Guy du Vin had the opportunity to buy up the last of the 2006 vintage. This really is textbook Chianti and it is wonderfully satisfying. There isn’t much left – but don’t despair - we also tasted the 2007, which I believe may turn out to be even better than the 2006 - if given a little more time in the bottle.
