I have become a fan of wines from Chile over the past couple of years. Last year I was a speaker at the Sommelier Summit in Santiago and had a chance to visit a number of wineries and many of the growing regions of Chile.

One of the biggest surprises was that one of the largets wine producers in Chile, Concha y Toro, was consistently producing some of the best wines for the money. These were not just the usual big winery plonk; they were wines with some character, drinkability, and style. We tend to think that it is only the small, limited production producers that turn out the most interesting wines, but more often than you might think, the big producers turn out delicious, serious wines at great prices.

Casillero del Diablo Reserva Privada is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Syrah. The wine spent 14 months aging in French oak barrels, which added some complexity.

This is a big, full bodied, fruit driven wine. The wine is delicious with a spicy nose of black current, plum, and pepper. It is smooth and very well structured with firm tannins – and that is what makes me a fan of this wine. It is completely enjoyable and I highly recommend it when you are in the mood for something big and rich but not very spendy.
