Barbera is one of the most widely planted red grapes in Piedmont. Once looked down on as a simple everyday table wine, it has now grown to much higher levels of quality. Good Barbera is a terrific food wine and can be a great value.

The Damilano is a perfect example of this. It is nicely balanced for such a young wine, with red and black cherry fruit. It has Barbera’s famous acidity, but is not at all biting. The tannins provide a smooth source of structure, something that makes this fruit forward wine very easy to drink without becoming cloying. It is a very satisfying wine. A life changer? No. But a great wine to drink everyday.

The Damilano name is an old one in the Langhe area of the Piedmont. The owners have had a hand in this place since the 1890s, but made their fortune in the bottled water business. Guido Damilano heads the estate along with his sister and a couple of cousins. The winery focus is on Barolo and they own a piece of the famed Cannubi vineyard, with more than half of that site.

The winemaking is pretty traditional and nothing fancy or flashy – but the wine is great. They produce about 2000 cases of Barbera yearly.
