Punset Barbera d'Alba Italy 2009 (out of stock until next vintage)

This rustic Barbera is rich with cherries and raspberries on the nose, and an earthy, leather character on the palate. It has a great finish where the sweet black plum fruit shines through. Barbera is always high in natural acidity, meaning that it will pair well with even the richest of foods.

The word Punset is a Piemontese term for a hilltop that pokes up through the winter mists. It also describes Marina Marcarino's winery, which sits on top of a steep hill across the valley from Neive, one of the three towns in the Barbaresco Appellation.

The family has owned the 40 ha of vines around the town of Neive for many years, but used to only make wine for family use. In 1964, Renzo Marcarino decided to sell his wines under the name Punset. Today, the winery is run by his daughter, Marina Marcarino, one of only a few female wine makers in Piedmont. The vineyards are maintained using organic viticulture. Punset is the only winery in the area producing organic Barbaresco certified by ECOCERT.

The Barbera grapes are left on the vine for as long as possible to keep acidity down, then vinified in stainless steel and aged in wood for a short time to give a rounder and smoother finish. I think that one taste will show you what a great value this wine is.
