It is still highly allocated, as not that much comes into the state. The 2005 was our most sought after California Chardonnay all year because of the incredibly high quality, the remarkable value, and because it was amazingly tasty.

Chardonnay – when you find a good one – it can be the best thing there is. But, just like Pinot Noir, it seems like you have to taste a hundred examples to find one that is really delicious. You need to know your producers. In California, one of the most reliable is Ridge, but the wines tend to be in short supply and on the pricy side. On the other hand, you only have one life, why waste your time and money on mediocre wine. Get the Ridge and live a little. The recession is over – right?

The 2006 has really come around over the last couple of months and is coming into its own. It is very tasty, with focused, bright flavors of melon, honeysuckle, and lemon with a mineral core. The oak is beginning to integrate nicely. You should have a bottle or two of Ridge tucked in the back of your closet. You deserve it. (Only a few bottles left.)
