Evesham is the favorite town in England of winemaker/owner Russ Raney and his wife Mary, and it was the natural choice for the name of their beautiful estate on the east slope of the Eola Hills in West Salem. Since 1986, Russ Raney has tended 7.5 acres of his estate-owned vineyards. Seven of these acres are committed to Pinot Noir, which becomes the "Le Puits Sec," or "dry well" bottling. He also purchases grapes from several sites nearby, including Temperance Hill, Shea Vineyard, and Mahonia Vineyard.

We've said it before and we'll keep saying it - we think Russ Raney consistently makes the most outstanding Pinot Noir in Oregon. The wines always disappear quickly because so little is made.

This is one of Russ' entry level Pinots. I had expected it to be closed in and a bit austere, but, it is very accessible right now – juicy and delicious. The nose has bright cherry fruit with just a slight note of sassafras in the background. Lots of spice and perfume. The wine is open and very drinkable with nice acidity to keep all the fruit in check. If you want a very affordable Oregon Pinot that you can enjoy right now and over the next 3 years or so – this is the one that I think you should buy.
